The riots in Tallinn may not be over, but reports indicate they are being kept under control, and many observers have praised the Estonian police. Several City Paper readers live in Tallinn’s city center and are posting regular reports. See the latest at: www.balticsww.com/forum

Rioting began Thursday night when the Estonian government began exhumation of possible graves at the Bronze Soldier site. When the rioting began, the government quickly removed the Bronze Soldier monument to an undisclosed location. Reports vary, but some say 40% of the old city has been vandalized. One stabbing death was reported, as well as many injuries on the part of both police and protestors. The protestors, mostly young Russian-speakers, chanted “Russia” as they danced through the city ransacking stores, kiosks, burning Estonian flags, and turning over the occasional car.
