Estonia drafts attack policy against renegade planes
Follow your flight plan, or else!
Estonia is the last NATO member state without regulations on attacking renegade civilian planes. Local newspapers report the defense ministry is in the final stages of preparing that legislation. Under the plan, the Minister of Defense is the individual who may issue the order to shoot down a civilian plane not following its flight plan, should the minister deem the renegade a threat to state security.
NATO spokesman Robert Pszel said there are no common rules for dealing with this issue in member states. “If there is a plane in NATO air space that can be considered a renegade, dealing with that plane is in the authorities of each member state.”
