Concordia kingpins get "conditional" jail sentences

Susi family won’t go to the big house if they can behave

The North Estonian Harju county court approved an agreement so that the former heads of the bankrupt Concordia University, Mart Susi and Mari-Ann Susi, received five- and three-year sentences, respectively, for their role in theft of university funds. The sentences will not be executed if the two manage not to commit other willful crimes in the next three years. The two will also be required to compensate for damages done and reach agreements to close all civil court cases outstanding against them.

The couple was charged with causing millions of kroons in losses to Concordia International University from 1996-2003 when Mart Susi was the rector and Mari-Ann Susi pro-rector of the university.

At the time, Estonian newspapers ran photographs of some of the suspected uses of the university’s funds: horses, a helipad, a manor home. Later, the university was sold to Audentes.
