Only 15% of Estonian school teachers are male
Small wonder: men can earn 3-4 times more as construction workers.
When school convenes in the autumn, men will comprise only 2,400 out of Estonia’s 15,800 total teachers. The average age of a teacher is 44.9 years and the average wage of a junior teacher is 8,000 kroons (511 euros) a month.
Unofficially, construction workers in Tallinn who are able to do work at a western standard (not the majority of them) can earn from 20,000-30,000 kroons per month (roughly 1,200-1,900 euros). Sadly, if you’re a sober man with a family to support, construction looks a lot more appealing.
