High End

Ainavas (Landscape): (J-2) Peldu 23, tel. 6781-4316, fax 6781-4317; [email protected]. A truly lovely boutique hotel where the managers' selfproclaimed motto is put guests in a good mood, and keep them in one. A friendly staff is the right start; the dimly lit denlike lobby bar (complete with roaring fireplace) also helps. But it's the rooms, each with a different nature theme, that really get guests cheery. Ainavas has wonderful breakfasts, too, that vary every morning. A double is 174 €.

Albert Hotel: (E-4) Dzirnavu 33, tel. 6733-1717; [email protected]. A brand new hotel in the heart of Riga named for none other than Albert Einstein (well, also Albert Street is nearby and there was a Bishop Albert). Albert boasts everything modern—plasma screen TVs in each of its 246 rooms, free WiFi. Rooms have a Nordic, practical touch—no frou-frou chintz, just good design—and each holds words by Albert Einstein (example: "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere."). Albert also has a library on the ground floor (in its Bestsellers restaurant) and an 11th floor Star Lounge with excellent views. Doubles from 95-150 euros, depending on the season. www.alberthotel.lv

Centra: (I-3) Audeju 1, tel. 6722-6441, fax 6750-3281; [email protected]. A very well located hotel; it's right next to two of the capital's most picturesque landmarks, the St. John's and St. Peter's churches. The design is minimalist, with a light, lovely Italian touch. Rooms on the upper floors have great views. Free wifi in all rooms. Doubles start at around 91 €.

Domina Inn Riga: (B-3) Pulkveza Brieza 11/13, tel. 6763-1800, fax 6763-1808; [email protected]. This hotel opened in April 2005, so the jury is still out. However, Domina Hotels in the other Baltic states are well thought of, so we imagine this one will be a success. 110 rooms in a central location. Domina Inn offers high-speed internet connections in every room—something not easy to find in Riga hotels. Standard double is 140 €.

Grand Palace: (H-1) Pils 12, in the old city; tel. 6704-4000, fax 6704-4001; [email protected].  Class with a capital C. You can literally feel it in the air at this luxurious, impeccable hotel. The Grand Palace is located on a quiet cobblestoned street amidst many of the most beautiful buildings, squares and churches in Riga; the president's castle office is also just a stone's throw away. The lounge bar and two restaurants here are gorgeous, and all the rooms offer top-class comfort. A standard double is around 240 €. www.schlossle-hotels.com

Gutenbergs: (H-2) Dome square (Doma laukums) 1, in the very hub of the old city; tel. 6781-4090, fax 6750-3326; [email protected].  This hotel, named after the 15th century German printmaster Johann Gutenberg, is located in what was one of the first publishing houses in the Baltic states. Rich, 19th-century decor, with a spectacular roof-top garden that opens in the summer months. It has the full range of high-call hotel services. A single room is around 100 €; a double is around 115 €.

Hotel Bergs: (C-4) Elizabetes 83/85, tel. 6777-0900, fax 6777-0940; [email protected].  Hotel Bergs is recommended by Condé Nast Johansens European & The Mediterranean Hotel Guide 2007. It is elegant yet understated. Most of the spacious suites and luxury apartments have kitchenettes and a few have fireplaces. The owners descend from the prominent pre-war Bergs family, portraits of whom grace the walls. Room prices range from 175 to 339 €—which is reasonable given the breathtaking quality www.hotelbergs.lv

Man-Tess: (H-4) Teatra 6, in the old city; tel. 6721-6056, fax 6782-1249; [email protected].  A small, classy hotel. The lobby is done up with Greek columns, trees and live parrots. You have to cross a goldfish pond to get to the elevator. The rooms are some of the most delightfully designed in Riga. All are different; no prefab, cookie-cutter rooms here. Man-Tess also has an attic conference room that is among the coziest you'll find. It is pricey, but staying here is a major treat. Double: 130 €.

Maritim Park Hotel Riga: (E-1) Slokas 1, across the Daugava River and on the edge of the Uzvaras park; tel. 6706-9000, fax 6706-9001; [email protected].  An outstanding hotel. From the outside, the excellent Park Hotel has something of the look of a Deco building along a Miami beach. Park Hotel is owned by the German Maritim hotel chain. Especially given the high room quality, prices are quite good: starting from 115 € for a double. They also have very good, conference facilities, with a newly opened extension, the most spacious in Riga. Try their great 11th floor restaurant, Bellevue, or the Park Restaurant on the first floor. Fitness center, sauna and Turkish bath, too.

Metropole: (I-4) Aspazijas 36/38, near the train station; tel. 6722-5411, fax 6721-6140; [email protected].  Established in 1871, the Metropole is literally the oldest hotel located in the oldest part of Riga. Completely renovated in 1992, this landmark four-star hotel has added modern amenities (wifi, too) without spoiling its unique history. In the 1930s, the hotel was purportedly the hub of Western and Soviet espionage. You can almost see James Bond sipping a martini at the bar. Rooms are impeccable with a Scandinavian touch. Close to the old town and opera. Double starts at 85 €. www.metropole.lv

Nordic Hotel Bellevue: Raina blvd. 33, tel: +371 67063400, fax: +371 6706 3401 [email protected] located in the very center of Riga. This hotel offers 112 stylish and well designed rooms with all amenities including free WiFi, the famous high class restaurant Bel Ami, a lobby bar, fireplace room, conference and meeting rooms and the outstanding Babor Spa recreation center. Room rates start from 99 EUR incl. breakfast.

Park OK Hotel: Maza Nometnu 43, tel. 6780-4860, fax 6780-4861; [email protected].  Hotel in a luxurious 19th century mansion about 4 km from the city center. The building sits in the middle of a park. Suites here are spacious and manoresque. Prices, shocking for many no doubt, start from around 510 €.

Reval Hotel Latvija: (C-4) Elizabetes 55, tel. 6777-2222, fax 6777-2221; [email protected].  The long awaited rejuvenation of the Hotel Latvija—once the epitome of Intourist inhospitality—finally happened in early 2001. Many rooms have breathtaking views of the nearby old city. Fitness center, restaurants, casino, beauty salons and much more. Excellent location, smack dab in the middle of Riga and also next to a lovely park. Try their breathtaking Skyline Bar, the Esplanâderestaurant, and their Voodoo nightclub downstairs. Double: 135 €. www.revalhotels.com

Reval Hotel Ridzene: (C-4) Reimersa 1, tel. 6732-4433, fax 6732-2600; [email protected]. If there is a hotel that is a physical representation of the dramatic changes in Latvia, this is it. Once a quintessential Soviet hotel (it was also shot at during a 1991 Soviet crackdown), it is now one of the finest in the country. Elegant, classy and quite expensive; around 200 € for a double. This was one of the first five-star hotels in the region, and it definitely deserves the rating. There's a strong Scandinavian flavor to the hotel, but also a strong sense of Latvian design—for which Riga is becoming so well known. They also have one of the finest restaurants in Riga, called Pyramid. www.revalhotels.com

Riga: (H-4) Aspazijas 22, tel. 6704-4224, fax 6704-4223; [email protected].  A leading hotel for over 100 years, Hotel Riga survived the entirety of the 20th century and is improving quality all the time. Fantastic location, on the very edge of the old city and across the street from the Latvian National Opera. Ask for a room facing the park and opera house. Even though it's centrally located, it's quiet. A standard double is some 135 €.

Royal Square Hotel & Suites: Kalku 3a, tel. + 371 67214 555, fax + 371 67214777, [email protected]; This new luxury business hotel offers five star service in the best location – it's all here, right in the heart of the most historical area of Riga. The hotel offers 31 rooms, including classic, executive, and suites. However, for the ultimate in luxury, there are suites with additional extras such as a private sauna and romantic fireplace. Rooms rates start from 135 Eur. www. royalsquare.lv

Hotel de Rome: (H-3) Kalku iela 28, near the Freedom Monument; tel. 6708-7600, fax 6708-7606; [email protected].  Right on the edge of the old town, Hotel de Rome's location is hard to beat. Its facade isn't the prettiest in town, but the interior and rooms are done in fine taste—the hotel is decorated with modern art and furniture from the owner's private collection. For the most comfortable luxury, treat yourself to a stay in their presidential suite. Wifi available in every room. A double's 166 €.

Middle Range

Avitar: (A-5) Valdemara 127, tel. 6736-4444, fax 6736-4988, [email protected].  Located a few kilometers from the city center. Rooms are clean and adequate for the price. A double is 63 €.

Best Western Hotel Mara: (D-2) Kalnciema 186, a 15-minute drive from Riga's center, two minutes from the airport; tel. 6770-2718, fax 6770-2708; [email protected].  A very good mid-range hotel. Sparkling clean; faultless service. Considering its proximity to the airport, it's surprisingly quiet. The main problem is finding it: keep your eyes peeled at the turnoff to the airport; the Mâra is behind the trees 100 meters from the turnoff. A double is some 85 €.

Doubles start at around 91 €.

City Hotel Bruninieks (Knight): (B-4) Bruninieku 6, tel. 6731-5140, fax 6731-4310; [email protected];  a 15-minute walk from the city center. Recently renovated and now larger than it used to be. Minimalist decor, good ISDN lines. Double: 75 €.

Conference Hotel TOMO: Raunas 44, tel. 6787 0787, fax 6787 0777, [email protected].  Conference Hotel TOMO: Raunas 44, tel. 6787 0787, fax 6787 0777, [email protected] (15 minutes from center on no. 17 trolley) Don't look for high style, rather no frills, clean practicality. Fifteen minutes outside of the city though brings you free guarded parking, something not easy to come by in Riga. Hotel is ideal for those conferencing on a budget. Conference facilities for 200. 65-78 € for a standard double, depending on the season. Tomo, by the way, happens to mean something in Japanese, though the name comes from owner's dog. And you gotta love a man who would name his hotel after his dog. www.hoteltomo.lv

ElizaBetes Nams: (B-3) Elizabetes 27, tel. 6750-9292, fax 6750-9291; [email protected].  This is a lovely boutique hotel in a 1920s wooden building in the heart of a celebrated Jugendstil quarter. Each Scandinavian-quality room has been lovingly designed and is distinct from the others. This place lacks some of the big-hotel services, but that is integral to its charm: it is classy, even though it almost has the feel of a larger B&B. There's a small bar by the lobby, with a fireplace—and excellent breakfasts are served in a quaint downstairs room. Good value for your money; you can almost certainly not go wrong coming here. Double: some 95 €.

Felicia Hotel: Stirnu 32b, tel. 6759-9942, fax 6754-8145; [email protected].  Take trolley bus #11 or #18 from the city center. Great value if you don't mind the 15-minute car ride from the center. Clean, luxurious, spacious. Saunas, swimming pool, even indoor tennis courts. Rates from 50 to 70 €. Very small singles for just 25 euros.

Forums: (I-4) Valnu 45, tel. 6781-4680, fax 6781-4682; [email protected].  On the edge of the old city, near the train station. A reasonable mid-range option, with well-kept rooms if a tad stuffy. Double: around 85 €.

Karavella: (A-3) Katrinas Dambis 27, by Riga's docks; tel. 6732-3130, fax 6783-0187; [email protected].  The top floor's rooms are renovated. By Riga standards good prices for a near-city-center hotel; 65 € for a double.

Konventa Seta: (I-3) Kalku 9/11, in a beautiful self-contained complex of restored medieval buildings in the old city; tel. 6708-7501, fax 6708-7515; [email protected].  Managed by the same people who run the Hotel de Rome. Konventa Sçta is a very good but scaled-down version of its fancier sister hotel. Rooms here have an earthier, Scandinavian feel: white walls and parquet floors. Some of the better rooms have medieval-era beams exposed on the ceiling and many have views overlooking the red-tiled roofs of the old city. Doubles run about 80 €. The hotel breakfasts are very good. Konventa Sçta is excellent value for your money.

Laine: (C-4) Skolas 11, tel. 6728-8816, fax 6728-7658; [email protected].  This hotel, tucked in a city-center courtyard in Riga's Jugendstil district, has been around for years, but it has only gotten better over time. Laine is cozy, quiet and, especially after renovations, more comfortable than ever. Service is always friendly and efficient. Given its location, just a short walk from the city's main sights and hotspots, this hotel is very good value for your money. Double: around 75 €. www.laine.lv

Medzabaki: At Lilaste, 21 km outside Riga on the Tallinn-Riga highway; tel. 6714-7070; [email protected]. The name means "Honey Boots," and that's a story too long to go into here. This sturdy, 40-room log hotel is 21 kilometers from Riga on Lake Lilaste, an outstanding escape from the rat race of city hotels. Check in on your way to Riga, and let the family enjoy a day at the lake while you do business in Riga. About 65 euros for a double room. The restaurant offers outstanding prices (a great meal for around 7 euros). Free WiFi. www.medzabaki.lv

Nams 99: (C-6) Stabu 99, tel. 6731-0762, fax 6731-3204; [email protected].  More of an apartment complex than a hotel, in a Jugendstil building a five-minute drive from the city center. Very private, very quiet. Each of eight apartments measures about 130 square meters. Prices range from 60 to 290 € a night, but you can get a rate cut for longer stays.

NB Hotel: (E-1) Slokas 49, tel. 6781-5333, fax 6781-5222; [email protected]. A quite adequate, clean hotel near the botanical garden. All the bells and whistles, including cable TV and pool tables. A double is some 65 €.

O.K.: (D-1) Slokas 12, tel. 6786-0050, fax 6789-2702; [email protected].  A very modern-looking hotel on the other side of the Daugava River. Well-kept, efficient. A double is around 90 €.

Radi un Draugi (Relatives and Friends): (I-3) Marstalu 1/3, tel. 6782-0200, fax 6782-0202; [email protected].  A hotel in god taste that's also still good value for your money; this place verges on a high-end hotel but remains mid-range as far as prices go. A big selling point is its excellent location in the old city. Doubles start at 67 €.

Serena: (G-2) Jekaba 26/28, tel. 6732-4545, fax 6787-3572; [email protected].  A tiny hotel in an old city courtyard with just four rooms. Doubles are 65 €.

Skanste: (A-4) Skanstes 9, tel. 6751-9922, fax 6751-9921. Located in a green and quiet neighborhood a few kilometers away from the city center, this new hotel offers clean and adequate rooms for a reasonable price. Double: 53 €.

Tia: (B-4) Valdemara 63, tel. 6733-3918, fax 6783-0390; [email protected]. A 15-minute walk from the old city, close to the Skonto Olympic Hall. It's reasonably priced, with some amenities. Some rooms have balconies, some internet connection. Rooms have been recently renovated. Double is 80 €, luxury room 106 €.

Viesturs Hotel: (I-3) Mucenieku 5, tel. 6735-6060; e-mail [email protected]. Thirteen unique rooms located down a narrow lane in the city center. The hotel has tastefully combined old plaster and brick construction with modern amenities. A suite is available with a Jacuzzi, sauna, and rooftop balcony. Double is 90 €.

Vecriga: (H-3) Gleznotaju 12/14, in the old city; tel. 6721-6524, fax 6721-4561; [email protected].  A quaint hotel in a medieval building. It only has ten rooms, giving it a more homey feel. The hotel also has a lovely courtyard that imitates a small street of the old town. A double is 100 €.

Bed & Breakfast

B&B Riga: (B-4) Gertrudes 43, tel. 2652-6400; [email protected]. This is a family-owned place with spacious apartments. The centrally-located, 103 year-old building has been renovated to a European standard and is one of the best bargains in town. Choose from a one-bedroom affair to a fully-furnished, 50 square-meter apartment with a washing machine. Parking on the premises. Prices range from 40 to 70 € per night. Great for groups.
